If arts and crafts are your passion, and/or your business, then sometimes you need to get inspired with new ideas.

I don’t mean go to shows and copy something else, but just take a look at what is out there and it will quite often spark an idea.

Go to craft shows out of town, fall fairs, and especially crafts magazines. It can happen to even the most creative person, you just get stuck in a rut of making the same things every year, and you want to freshen everything up, try something new!

If you go to the magazine section of any store, you will literally find a magazine for every possible subject, but in the craft section, there are quite a few, scan through, see what others are making, and what will usually happen, if you are a creative person, something will spark an idea.

It quite often has nothing to do with the project you see, just something about it sparks another idea. You need visual stimulation to get the imagination going, get the creative juices flowing. Since painting and sewing are my passion, I subscribe to craft magazines with these subjects, for ideas, they also introduce me to new products, such as new paints, new fabrics, new paint brushes… things that light that light bulb in your head!.. and ideas just start flowing so fast, you need to write them down!

So, get yourself some craft magazines, subscribe to make life easier and its like Christmas when they come in the mail.. I can’t wait for each new issue, to see what I can come with for this years crafts, and if you are really original and creative, maybe look into putting your creation in the magazine. They are usually looking for fresh ideas, you may make some money that way!

Are you an experienced craftsperson who is looking to increase your public presence? Consider donating some of your crafts to a local nonprofit agency or local charity. Not only will this allow you to network and make important contacts, you’ll also be making a difference where it really counts and strengthening your bonds to the community. Here are five easy ways to get involved:

1. Find a cause you have a passion for. Simply stated, passion cannot be faked. You must choose a nonprofit charity that you really care about, and for which you would be willing to work for with no thought of compensation. Perhaps you’ve always been touched by hospital-bound children stricken by illness. You happen to specialize in creating charming, old-fashioned rag dolls. Why not donate some of your best work to spread a bit of joy?

In this scenario, you would want to seek out a nonprofit organization or charity that works with young hospital patients. Speak to the outreach director or volunteer coordinator of the agency you’re interested in. Tell them the ways you would like to help, and listen to their suggestions. They should be able to tell you about their current situation and needs. Hopefully, there will be a match, and you can begin to work together. Whatever you do, you should always check with the nonprofit agency before you simply start donating your crafts.

2. Offer to spearhead a charity event. If you specialize in kid’s craft parties, offer to hold a craft party for a local nonprofit agency. Be aware that this sort of undertaking will demand a lot of your time and energy. You may work with the nonprofit agency to coordinate the event.

Strive to make this collaboration as smooth and pleasant as possible. Remember that the event you organize will be a show of your leadership and organization skills. You’ll want to make a good impression as you connect with potential clients, and re-connect with previous customers. Most importantly, remember that the true goal of the event is to make a small difference in the lives of others.

3. Organize a charity crafts fair. Another way increase your public presence by donating your crafts is by organizing a charity craft fair. Consider setting up the crafts fair in conjunction with the nonprofit agency of your choice. Or you can hold the crafts fair on your own, and then donate the proceeds to a local charity.

Start by recruiting other experienced craftspeople for the fair. Advertise the event widely. Consider contacting your local media to raise awareness about the fair. Ask your local newspapers or television station to help advertise the event. The more exposure the crafts fair gets the more proceeds you’ll be able to donate. And, your crafts and the work of your fellow craftspeople will gain much deserved exposure.

4. Hold a charity craft auction as part of a larger event. If the idea of organizing an entire crafts fair sounds a bit overwhelming to you, then consider holding a charity craft auction as part of a larger event. Find a group of interested and experienced craftspeople and put together a catalog of sale items, with all proceeds going to the nonprofit agency of your choice. You and your fellow craftspeople should donate some of your best work to ensure a successful auction.

If your crafts sell well at the charity auction, you can expect your reputation as a craftsperson to grow. Selling your work in this type of atmosphere demonstrates that your work has value, and that it can make a difference in the life of someone who needs a change.

5. Donate your crafts for use. If you create crafts that can be put to good use by individuals less fortunate than you, by all means work with the appropriate nonprofit agency to donate your work. For instance, nonprofit groups such as Wrap Them in Love and Knit for Kids provide needy individuals with warm quilts and much-needed sweaters.

If you specialize in such crafts, donating your work is a wonderful way to make a big difference in the life of someone who needs help. You’ll gain experience in working with nonprofit agencies, make valuable contacts, gain resume experience, and gain confidence in your work.

Help answer the question about Crafts
What are some good arts and crafts ideas for older boys AND younger girls?
Hi! I am holding a summer class for girls and boys ages 6-12. I have a few 6,7 year old girls, a few 8,9,10 year old boys and some kids in the middle. I really need some fun craft ideas to keep these kids occupied, but am having some difficulties finding crafts for both of these age groups. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Also, any fun games, stories, other ideas that anyone has to pass time would be great! The classes are an hour long.

You want to encourage your child’s creativity and provide a wholesome form of entertainment – a nice alternative to television shows and video games – so you’ve deciding to purchase arts and crafts for kids. The next question is where are you going to shop to find the products you want. One answer is to buy your arts and crafts for kids on the Internet. Here are a few reasons why.

Selection

As a parent, you know your child better than anyone but you also know that there are plenty of arts and crafts for kids he or she simply won’t want anything to do with. If you go to an ordinary toy store or even a craft store, you’re going to be facing a limited selection of items that may not meet any of your needs. These stores can only hold a certain number of items because of their storage capacity and limited demand for arts and crafts for kids.

On the other hand, online stores do not have that problem. They can usually provide a better selection of items or can specialize in a certain type of items. For example, Smalltime Child offers some arts and crafts for kids that aren’t readily available in most stores, such as oil pastels (an easier to use alternative to crayons) and sketchbooks designed for children.

Convenience

If you’re a parent, you also know that your time is very precious. You don’t want to be running from store to store looking for the arts and crafts for kids you want. Plus, all that driving around is going to drain your gas tank pretty quickly. Then there’s also the crowds and the unruly kids of other parents to deal with.

Wouldn’t you be happier if you could shop from the relative peace and quiet of your home? Shopping online for arts and crafts for kids allows you to do just that. Plus, today’s online transactions are just as safe – if not safer – then in-store transactions. Online shopping is also a great idea for Christmas gifts when you want to keep those arts and crafts for kids gifts a surprise.

Price

One of the biggest surprises for most people is the price difference you often find between online and offline stores selling arts and crafts for kids. Because brick and mortar stores have so much overhead cost to deal with, they usually have to pass on those costs to consumers. Online stores don’t have that problem so they can pass on the savings to consumers instead.

Even if you’ve never thought about purchasing arts and crafts for kids online, you should take the time to do some comparison shopping before you make any purchases.

Shipping Savings

In the past, the biggest detractor to online shopping was the shipping cost. That’s also becoming less of a problem. Many stores selling arts and crafts for kids, including Smalltime Child, offer free shipping to customers who spend a certain amount at the site.

There are many religious people who do not believe in celebrating Halloween as they feel that the holiday condones Satanic worship. There are, however, some religious people who do not mind participating in Halloween, and for such people, there are a number of different religious crafts that they can try their hand in during Halloween. These crafts will spread God’s word as well as be enjoyable to make. A number of religious crafts will allow you to celebrate Halloween as well as remain within the limits of your beliefs and convictions.

Doling candy sticks is one great religious crafts to make on Halloween and can be used for trick or treat activities. You need to buy card stock paper from your department store and cut out shapes of candy corn. Colour the tips white, the middle yellow and the bottoms orange. Use markers or crayons according to your preference.

At the bottom most part of the corn, you can write these phrases: “You picked a treat from the bowl, here’s a treat for the soul.” At the back of the candy, write down different verses from the bible. Punch a hole on top of the corn and use a string to tie it to the different treats. These kinds of Halloween crafts can involve the entire family and spending time making these are great ways of starting the holiday.

Another cute religious craft that is also easy to create involve kids. First, you need to take a round lollipop like Tootsie Pop. For each lollipop, take a 4” square of burlap, 2” round green felt, a rubber band, black and orange yarn and glue. Wrap the lollopop with the burlap and secure at the bottom using the rubber band. This forms the ‘neck.’ Make the hat by gluing the green felt at the top. Draw a smiling mouth, the nose and the eyes and your very own scarecrow is ready.

After this, take strips of paper with bible verses written on them such as the Psalm 118:6 – I will not be afraid; The Lord is beside me or Psalm 32:7 – You protect me from trouble; You are my hiding place. Attach these papers to the scarecrow by punching a hole through them and pulling yarn.

The best thing about religious Halloween crafts is that these are great ways of having some fun as well as spreading God’s word. You can always rely on your imagination to come up with your own crafts. There are a number of ways of participating in Halloween without offending your religious sentiments.

Starting a home craft making business is just the thing for those who love working with crafts as a hobby. The quality and design of hand crafted goods is prized the world over. Furniture, toys, boxes and the like are used everyday. There is a definite market for craft making business opportunities.

Many products of art and crafts are marketable today. Everything from shipping crates to armoires is made from wood products. There is also an emerging market for hand made wooden toys. If you posses skill and talent, you can make money in the wood working business opportunities field.

Things you will need to start a craft business are fairly simple. You will need to know your state and local requirements for opening a business in the art and crafts business opportunities field. More importantly, you will need to know what types of items you want to produce. This will have a definitive bearing on the supplies and tools you will need to have on hand. Also think about joining a trade organization associated with woodworking. This can help guide you in advertising your work as well as shows and events to help showcase your finer pieces.

There are also more traditional means of sales in the home made craft business opportunities field. Trade shows, flea markets, arts and crafts fairs, malls and small outlet stores are all resources that need to be investigated. Marketing your custom designs to furniture stores and specialty stores is a great way to start your home craft business rolling. Make sure you do not over-book your business, however. You will need to consistently maintain your level of quality throughout the sales process.

You will need a good supplier of various art supplies. Though you should never use sub-standard materials, quality is especially imperative for toys, furniture, and other practical items that your clients will be using daily. A long lasting product will get you plenty of referrals.

Once you have established a relationship with a supplier for your homemade crafts business, you will need to consider your area and what your advertising should be. There are several ways in which you can market your products. Having a web site to direct clients to for a glimpse of your products is a fantastic way to get your name out there and to showcase your work. People who shop online will be quick to refer you if they have a pleasant experience and are happy with the outcome of the purchase.

There is also the artistic side of the craft making field. Sculptures, frames, and other art objects can be sold as well as toys. Your only limit is your imagination and your bravery to try new things. Crafts can be a fun and lucrative career. You need the ability to create as not only a practical goods, but as an artist as well. If you have dabbled in crafts, think of it now as a career. Craft making can be a fulfilling and successful endeavor.

Selling crafts online can seem rather difficult. Crafts are typically seen as a luxury and not a necessity. So when selling crafts online you must work hard at enticing, charming and ultimately convincing online shoppers to buy your crafts. When starting to sell your crafts online it is important to understand that sales won’t come pouring in overnight. If you can wrap your head around this fact in the beginning you will be less likely to become discourage if you don’t make a sale your first week selling online.

Selling crafts online requires separating your role as artist from that of seller. You must put on your seller’s hat and separate your emotions from the sales process. The artists who are most successful in selling their crafts online have learned the importance of treating all visitors or potential customers as guests they would invite to their home, whether they make a purchase or not. Remember to be polite and charming to all who contact you via your online shop or web site. Be careful not to judge those who simply ask you a question but in the end do not make a purchase. You never know that person who seemingly pesters you with a question could turn around and make a purchase at a later date.

When a potential customer visits your web site or online shop, make sure that you have your contact information easily displayed along with your return policy. These two items will set you apart from the competition and it lets potential customers know that no. 1 you are a credible artist and no. 2 being accessible and providing them with good service is important to you. Also having a frequently asked questions section is a good idea. This way commonly asked questions are easily and quickly answered without you being bombarded with a bunch of emails or phone calls and potential customers having to wait on your response. Of course 3 more obvious things to have on your web site are professional images, accurate descriptions of your crafts and pricing. If you don’t have these things then you are not going to sell anything.

No matter what, the most important tip for selling crafts online is to approach the task in a realistic and practical manner. You must be diligent and patient in your efforts knowing that it may take awhile for you to start consistently getting sales online.

When I was a little girl, I loved to sit and make various holiday crafts. Now that I am a mother, I share my love for crafting with my daughter. Every holiday season, we take time out of our busy schedules to work on some new holiday craft projects.

When it comes to crafting with your children, I think it’s important to take photographs of your crafting session. After they become adults, you can dig out these photographs and reminisce about the fun time that you spent together.

If you are looking to build some crafting memories with your own children this Halloween season, consider making one of these quick and easy projects.

Pumpkin Walnut Shell Magnet

empty and clean walnut shell halves
scrap of brown chenille stem measuring 1/2″ in length
orange acrylic paint and paint brush
scrap of cardboard
1″ piece of magnet
all-purpose white craft glue
child safety scissors

Paint the halved walnut shell orange with acrylic paint; let dry. Lay walnut shell down on a scrap piece of cardboard (or poster board); trace around it. Cut out this ‘oval’ shape and set aside. Glue the chenille stem so it looks like the pumpkin stem to the top of the walnut shell. Glue the cardboard to the back of the walnut shell and let dry. Attach the magnet to the cardboard.

Lollipop Ghosts

1 sheet of white felt, cut into 5″ squares
1 lollipop
2 (1/8″ diameter) wiggle eyes
6″ piece of 1/8″ wide black satin ribbon
scrap of black felt, to make ghost’s mouth
white tacky glue
child safety scissors
*optional* substitute an old white cotton T-shirt for the white felt

Place the lollipop in the center of your felt square. Fold felt over; secure it shut with the black satin ribbon by tying a bow. Glue 2 tiny wiggle eyes on the face. Using black felt, cut out a tiny circle or oval measuring approximately 3/8″ in diameter to use for the ghost’s mouth. Glue mouth on below ghost’s eyes and your done!

Ghost Foam Magnet

1 ghost pattern
1 sheet of white foam
1 piece black foam scrap
2 (1/8″ diameter) wiggle eyes
1 magnet
white tacky glue
child safety scissors

You can free-hand your own ghost pattern. Place your ghost pattern on top of the white foam; trace around it. Cut out your ghost. Using a scrap of black foam, cut out a small mouth (round or oval) measuring 1/4″ in diameter. Glue your 2 wiggle eyes onto the ghost’s face along with the black mouth. Turn ghost over; glue on a piece of magnet. Let dry.

Ghost Ornament

1 (3 inch diameter) Styrofoam ball
1 (8 inch square) of white cotton fabric
1 piece of black felt
1 (4 inch) piece of black satin ribbon, hanging cord
1 small straight pin (used in sewing)
1 (6 inch) piece of black satin ribbon
white tacky glue
child safety scissors

Center the ball on the square of white fabric; wrap fabric around the ball. Tie fabric shut by using the 6″ piece of satin ribbon and make a bow. (the ball is the ghost’s head). Tie the 4″ piece of satin ribbon into a loop with a knot. Using the straight pin, push it through the knot and attach it to the top of your ghost’s head. Add a small dot of glue to hold it into place. Using the black felt, cut out the 2 eyes and a mouth and glue onto the head. Let dry. These look cute hanging from trees!

Looking for an inexpensive Easter Craft idea for your next project? This craft project costs less than .75 cents per refrigerator magnet and takes less than 20 minutes to make.

Great Project for: Sunday School, Vocational Bible School, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, School Craft Projects, Birthday Parties, and Easter Parties.

Appropiate Age Group: 4 and up

Materials Needed:

Patterns: Easter Egg, Easter Bunny Head, Chick, Cross, Basket
*note* A great source for patterns are preschool aged coloring books

Child Safety Scissors
All Purpose White Tacky Glue
Wiggle Eyes
Markets
Magnets
Foam Sheets: White, Yellow, Tan, Pink, Light Brown, Blue, etc
Miscellaneous: beads, buttons, sequins, yellow feathers

For the purpose of this project, we will assume that you are using Easter Patterns cut from a childs coloring book in the following shapes: Easter Egg, Bunny Head, Chick, Cross and Easter Basket.

To turn the coloring page into a pattern: Cut out the pattern by cutting just outside the patterns shape.

Place the paper shape from the coloring book on the reverse side and place it onto a piece of foam and trace around it. Using safety scissors, cut out the pattern from the foam sheet by cutting on the traced line.

Now its time to decorate your shapes using markers, beads, buttons and sequins.

Ideas:

Easter Eggs: glue on beads, buttons and sequins in pretty wavy patterns. If you are working with older children, you can coat your foam egg with white crafters glue and let them sprinkle on colored glitter which also makes for a pretty magnet.

Easter Chick: glue on wiggle eyes and yellow feathers. Using a black marker draw on a nose and a mouth.

Easter Bunny Head: Using markers color in pink ears and a pink nose. Using a black marker add on wiskers and a mouth. Glue on wiggle eyes.

Cross: You can decorate them however you choose or have the children write a bible quote onto them using markers

Basket: Have the children draw designs onto their baskets. They can cut out small oval shapes in pastel colors and glue them onto the front of their baskets to make easter baskets.

After you are done decorating all your magnets, flip them over and glue a 2 inch piece of magnet on the back and let dry for approximately 20 minutes.

Now you are all done! Super easy to do and they work up quickly. A great inexpensive craft project for kids!
